01 — The Problem

Why Most Interfaces Fail Their Users

A beautiful mockup isn't a great UI. Great UI design is invisible — users accomplish their goals without thinking about the interface. Most products fail this test because design decisions are driven by aesthetics, not user behavior.

Inconsistent Design Language

Buttons look different on every page. Colors shift. Spacing is random. Without a design system, every new feature adds visual debt — and users lose trust in a product that feels cobbled together.

Desktop-First Thinking

Over 60% of web traffic is mobile. Yet most UIs are designed on 27" monitors and"adapted" for mobile as an afterthought. The result: cramped layouts, tiny tap targets, and frustrated mobile users.

Pretty But Unusable

Award-winning visuals mean nothing if users can't find the checkout button. Design that prioritizes aesthetics over task completion is expensive decoration — not effective UI design.

03 — Our Design Process

From Brief to Pixel-Perfect Screens

Our design process is structured but flexible. Every stage produces deliverables you can review and approve before we move forward.

01

Research & Discovery

We audit your current design, analyze competitors, and review UX research findings. We define the visual direction, target audience expectations, and key interface principles before opening any ui application.

Moodboards Style tiles
02

Wireframing

Low-fidelity wireframes establish information hierarchy, layout structure, and user flows before visual interface begins. We validate the skeleton with stakeholders and users to ensure the foundation is solid.

Low-fi prototypes User flows
03

High-Fidelity Ui

Pixel-perfect screens in interface tool with real content, final typography, color system, and component states. Every interaction state — hover, active, disabled, error, loading — is built and documented.

Hi-fi Screens All states
04

Handoff & QA

Developer-ready specifications with auto-layout, spacing tokens, and responsive breakpoints. We stay through implementation to QA every screen against the ui — pixel-perfect is non-negotiable.

Behind the Interface: Two Projects in Detail

Real case studies show how our ui process translates into interfaces people actually use. We describe what we crafted and the problems we solved — not just pretty screenshots.

SaaS

FlowDesk — Analytics Dashboard Redesign

Challenge

FlowDesk's analytics platform had grown feature by feature into a maze of inconsistent screens. Users needed six clicks to reach their most-used report, and trial-to-paid conversion was stalling because new users couldn't find value fast.

Solution

We rebuilt the interface on a token-based interface system: one navigation model, a customizable dashboard home, and progressive disclosure for advanced settings. Every component was built in light and dark themes with all interaction states documented for developers.

NordBuild — B2B Storefront UI Overhaul

Challenge

NordBuild, a construction materials distributor, sold thousands of SKUs through an interface crafted a decade ago. Contractors ordering from job sites on phones fought cramped tables, tiny tap targets, and a checkout built for desktop mice.

Solution

We built a mobile-first storefront UI on an enterprise commerce platform: scannable product cards, thumb-friendly bulk ordering, tiered-pricing displays, and a two-step checkout. The visual hierarchy guides repeat buyers to reorder in seconds instead of minutes.

04 — Ui Philosophy

Seven Principles Behind Every Interface We Ship

Interface decisions aren't subjective at AWDS. Every choice is grounded in proven principles that balance aesthetics, usability, and business goals.

01

Clarity Over Cleverness

Users should never have to think about the interface. Clear labels, obvious actions, predictable patterns. A button that looks like a button. Navigation that goes where it says it goes.

02

Hierarchy Drives Attention

Size, color, weight, and space create visual hierarchy that guides users to what matters. Every screen has one primary action, one focal point, one clear next step.

03

Consistency Is Trust

Same component, same behavior, everywhere. Ui systems ensure that users learn your interface once and apply that knowledge across every screen. Consistency builds confidence.

04

Mobile-First, Always

We interface for the smallest screen first, then enhance for larger ones. This constraint produces cleaner, more focused interfaces — and ensures mobile users are never an afterthought.

05

Accessible by Default

WCAG 2.1 AA compliance isn't an add-on — it's built in from the start. Proper contrast ratios, focus states, keyboard navigation, and screen reader support in every component.

06

Performance-Aware Ui

We interface with implementation in mind. SVG over PNG. CSS animations over video. System fonts where possible. Every visual decision considers its impact on page load and rendering speed.

07

Dark Mode Is Not Optional

Modern users expect dark mode. We ui every screen in both light and dark themes from the beginning — using proper color tokens that switch cleanly without visual artifacts or contrast issues.

06 — Why AWDS

Ui That Gets Built Right

The gap between interface and development is where great interfaces die. Because we're ui specialists and developers, that gap doesn't exist.

Design-to-Code Team

Our ui specialists understand frontend constraints and implementation feasibility. Our developers understand typography, spacing, and visual hierarchy. The result: implementations that match the ui, every time.

Research-Informed Interface

Every ui decision is grounded in UX research. We don't interface based on trends or personal taste — we ui based on evidence of what works for your specific users.

Fast Iterations

Our interface system + component library = rapid exploration. We present 2-3 ui directions within the first week, iterate based on your feedback, and reach final approval faster than agencies that work in waterfall.

23 Years of Shipping

We've crafted for e-commerce, SaaS, enterprise, and startups. Patterns that work, patterns that fail — we've seen them all. This experience means fewer wrong turns and faster time to an interface that performs.

Honest answers about how we work, what it costs, and what you can expect

Absolutely — that's our strength. AWDS is a full-service agency with 17+ years of development experience. We build pixel-perfect implementations on enterprise platforms and modern frameworks. The same team that designs the interface codes it, ensuring zero quality loss in translation. See our web development services.

User-Tested
UX (User Experience) design focuses on how a product works — user flows, information architecture, and interaction patterns. UI (User Interface) design focuses on how it looks — visual design, typography, color, iconography, and component styling. Think of UX as the blueprint and UI as the finished building. We offer both as separate or integrated services. Learn more about our UX research services.

UI Projects
Timeline depends on scope: a landing page design takes 1-2 weeks, a full website redesign 3-6 weeks, and a complete design system for a SaaS product 6-10 weeks. We always start with a scoping call to provide an accurate timeline for your specific project.
100%
Custom Design
Yes. You receive full editable source files with organized layers, components, and responsive layouts. We provide detailed developer specifications including spacing, typography, color tokens, responsive breakpoints, and component interaction states. If we also handle development, the handoff is seamless.
100%
User-Tested
Our process includes unlimited minor revisions and 2-3 major direction changes. Most projects reach final approval within 2 rounds because our discovery phase aligns expectations before design begins. We'd rather invest time upfront in understanding your vision than iterate endlessly on misaligned concepts.

The design system was the piece I had underestimated. Buttons, tables, empty states — every component documented, so new features stop generating visual debt. Our dashboard finally looks like one product instead of five eras stitched together, and support tickets about "where do I click" faded noticeably.

A patient portal has hostile constraints: accessibility requirements, anxious users, data you cannot get wrong. The interface AWDS designed reads calmly at every screen size, tap targets sized for shaky hands, nothing decorative competing with the task. Our care team adopted it without training sessions, which for clinical software approaches magic. Still rolling it out across two more departments — so far the pattern library has absorbed every new case we throw at it.

Pretty was never the problem — our old interface photographed well and shopped badly. The redesign attacked task completion: fewer steps to cart, honest button labels, filters that behave on a phone. Checkout completion moved enough that finance asked what changed.

I brief design teams for a living, so hiring one out was a test of patience I expected to fail. Their file hygiene beat ours. Tokens, naming, component structure — production-ready in the truest sense. We kept the system and rebuilt our own process around it.
